#4 Bombers Blank RPI In a Doubleheader

Shalett had four hits and three RBI in the doubleheader
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The fourth-ranked Bombers extended their winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of Rensselaer, winning 7-0 in both games.

In the first game, the Bombers took a 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning on sophomore Hannah Shalett’s (Shepaug Valley/Bridgewater, Conn.) double to right field. In the fourth inning, the Bombers loaded the bases with no outs on a Shalett walk and back-to-back singles by sophomore Erica Cutspec (Fort Plain/Fort Plain) and senior Kaitlyn Dulac (Bay View/East Greenwich, R.I.). Senior Leigh Bonkowski (The William School/Mystic, Conn.) was then hit in the head by a pitch to drive in a run. Junior Mel Chinigo (Norwich Free Academy/Norwich, Conn.) followed with a walk for another RBI. After a groundball to third base forced Dulac out at home, sophomore Jessica Stangarone (Brewster/Brewster) hit a sacrifice fly to center field and senior Amanda Illinger (Norwich Free Academy/Norwich, Conn.) drove in two runs with a double to left field. Senior Stacey Bartels (Skyview/Vancouver, Wash.) hit a single up the middle, but Illinger was thrown out trying to score by the centerfielder. The Bombers added another run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Bonkowski.

Sophomore Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland, Ore.) improved to 9-1 on the season with a complete game two-hitter. She struck out seven, walked one, and retired the final 11 batters of the game in order. The win was Cade’s fifth shutout of the year and dropped her ERA to 0.99 for the season.

In the second game, both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Bombers rallied for seven runs. Shalett, Cutspec, and Dulac loaded the bases on three-consecutive singles. Bonkowski, Chinigo and sophomore Stacy Pelesz (Hudson/Livingston) followed with three more singles to left field, each driving in a run, and Stangarone walked to make the score 4-0. After two fly balls to the outfield failed to score anyone, Shalett hit a ground ball up the middle. The Rensselaer second baseman turned to force the runner out at second, but the shortstop wasn’t covering and Chinigo and Pelesz both scored. Stangarone and Shalett pulled off a double steal and Cutspec singled to right field. Stangarone scored on the play, but Shalett was thrown out by the right fielder at home to end the inning.

Sophomore Carly Myers (Claremont Secondary/Vancouver/British Columbia, Canada) earned the win in the second game, improving her record to 8-1. She allowed three hits and struck out seven in the complete game shutout, her third of the season. The Bombers have not been scored on in their last four games.
